Where would you like service and delivery vehicles to go when bike lanes have taken over roads and the city has not provided any alternative for them? Should we give up on all commerce in the city to please bicyclists? Thought you all wanted to "share" the road?
@smc - (1) simple: not in bike lanes; (2) your "give up on all commerce" comment demonstrates you haven't read the plethora of peer-reviewed articles that show a direct correlation between increased cycling and increased economic benefits
Chris Roof- If there is no alternative what would you like service vehicles to do? Cambridge has become so nasty, offensive and divisive that no one wants to come to do business here - and I do not blame them! I'm not a driver but I do need to occasionally receive a delivery or a service vehicle for my home, and as a pedestrian I am furious that cyclists now believe they are more entitled than anyone else on the road. Grow a pair and stop whining, go around an occasional obstacle as pedestrians safely do so daily. Take responsibility for your own safety like the rest of us.
SMC Excellent! Im a pedestrian too, and when we have the walk sign at a red light for cars and bikes, bikes fly thru the red light, almost hitting pedestrians! I was hit once and had to have an operation on my shoulder and knee. Bikes need to follow the rules of the road, and pay like cars to use the roads!
Do you really think all your posts asking to ticket and tow does anything? No. The car is gone before they could send out the police. Captain brain trust
I will continue to report these illegally parked vehicles which causes the roads to be unsafe. If you want cyclist to follow the rules, then you must have vehicle drivers also follow the rules.
As I stated I'm a pedestrian and I have no control over what drivers or cyclists do, enforcement is lacking here. What I should be able to expect is that cyclists and drivers give pedestrians respect and on the occasion when an obstacle occurs everyone deals with it and safely works around it. Pedestrians do it everyday, cyclists can too! I'm writing this from a European city cyclists love to love, and the difference here is that there are wider sidewalks, more space to maneuver and some sense of cooperation between all using the road - when you all can do that in Cambridge (where there will never be enough space) then you will get the respect you are demanding!
Its hardly even in the bike lane, and an empty parking lot next to it. Maybe Captain cant figure out a way to get by it! Cars have to follow rules. Bikes, scooters, skateboards, electric bikes etc dont. And I guess motorcycles can use the bike lanes now. Saw another yesterday.
If motor vehicles have to follow rules, why is this one park in the bike lane? That's against the law. Maybe it's time for motorist to respect the law.
@Pat: It is entirely obstructing the bike lane but even if it was 1 centimeter within the bicycle-only lane it would still be parked illegally and subject to immediate ticket and tow. Don't you agree that vehicle drivers should follow the law?
Captain it looks like its hardly, if even on the bike lane. There is an empty parking lot right there. Bikes break more rules than vehicles! Get over yourselves!
Captain Cyclist - you are hysterical, calm yourself down and take responsibility for your own actions. Seriously, if you cannot figure out how to safely negotiate this simple issue then you are the problem. At least vehicle drivers are held responsible for infractions in cities that use traffic enforcement (unlike Cambridge) and can be cited and risk the loss of their driving license, cyclists on the other hand simply ride away.
@smc If you're OK with vehicle drivers being held responsible for infractions, then you should be OK with these infractions being called in to CPD. So there's no real disagreement here, is there? Parking in a bike lane is against the law. It's as simple as that.
This a simple situation that doesn't require police action, one can easily negotiate safely around a situation where the driver of an armored truck needs to do their job safely also, and were probably gone soon afterwards. Unless it's a terribly flagrant abuse, let's take the safe route around and the higher ground, just be cooperative - it will go along way towards everyone accepting these new more difficult to negotiate situations for us all and ending this rancorous and divisive debate around the bike lanes.
@smc: This situation requires immediate and undivided police attention. It also requires immediate dispatch of a tow truck and ticketing of the driver.
@smc It's very telling that you're unable to acknowledge that parking in a bike lane is illegal. That same blindspot doesn't allow you to acknowledge that doing so is also dangerous for bicyclist. What can more cooperative than obeying the law?
Smc Captain. That truck is just on the right side of the white line. If neither of you can go by that truck safely, maybe you should have your eyes checked or stop riding your bikes. Your probably a danger to others if you cant see that!
@Pat: That truck is illegally parked in the bicycle-only lane. Don't you agree that vehicle drivers must follow the law? Isn't the law important and should be followed?
Captain i know u feel intitled but the truck is on the right side of the white line, a hugh parking lot right there. If you cant get around that you should not b on a bike...thats it adios...
CaptainCyclist, MayorTed, ChrisRoof - you people are intractable, uncooperative and truly irritating. You are giving cyclists a worse rep so get off your high horse, cooperate with others and play nice. We all need to share this limited space safely, your constant whining will not change anything. We are all responsible for our own safety and need to be more understanding of ours.
I blame the Cambridge traffic department and city planners for not giving alternatives after removing so much space necessary for pedestrians, commerce and construction. Now we must ALL share limited space safely, although ableist cyclists like you believe yourselves to be the priority. As a pedestrian here for decades, my experience is that it is less safe for me now than ever. People with disabilities and elders are most affected by the barrage of bikes and other wheeled devices. Perhaps we can vote in new councillors who believe in equity for ALL in our limited space.
Ciao
Well, I'm also a pedestrian and I fully support the bike lanes. Ableist cyclists is a curious phrase. I've read commentaries from those with disabilities that also support bike lanes. If you're claiming some consensus in that community, you're mistaken.

Thank you, Pat and SMC for trying to inject some common sense into this situation. I had to stop engaging with these fools. It's like that old saying about when you fight with pigs you both get dirty, but the pig likes it. Just a daily reminder at how divisive and toxic this city has become. I've lived here by choice for 50 years, it used to be a very nice place to live. Let's hope we can elect a new City Council comprised of mature, thoughtful individuals.
ERB lets hope the new council is a good one
I agree Cambridge use to be a great city to live in. Central Sq had many great places to shop and meet at..Hope it can be revitalized to be like that again. It should never have fallen like it has.
And hopefully they put stop lights for bikes at places pedestrians have to walk. And bikes stop!
Captain 😆 🤣 😂 positive predictor for sex 😆
Do you stop at red lights, or fly through even if people are walking across? Do you yell at pedestrians? Give them the finger? Dont believe everything you read!

Sad that you still can't admit that parking in a bike lane is illegal. But you don't have to if the police understand. I'm voting for bike safety;

Study Finds Cyclists Are Better People Than Drivers
The results show drivers are less interested in the common good than cyclists.
